In 2011, Lucas was accepted by examination as a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (surgery chapter). He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in small animal surgery in 2015, and an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Orthopaedics in 2016. He spent several years working in the Northwest of England prior to returning home to Brisbane.
