Is This Course for You?
Veterinary professionals often spend their working lives in a state of outpouring, giving mentally, emotionally and physically to care for our patients, clients, colleagues, families and the people around us.
But how often do we intentionally focus on our own inpouring, the practices that replenish our energy, support our wellbeing and allow us to continue doing the work we care deeply about?
Professional wellbeing isn’t about perfection or finding extra hours in an already busy day. It’s about developing practical approaches to self-care and self-compassion that nourish and sustain us through the realities of veterinary life.
Drawing on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness framework, evidence-informed habit-formation strategies, and the research of Dr Kristin Neff on self-compassion, this course helps you turn theory into practical changes that support your wellbeing, fulfilment, and long-term career sustainability.
Across three live online sessions, you’ll explore ways to balance your deep dedication to others with practices that support your own wellbeing. Together, we’ll examine self-care, self-compassion and their practical application in the face of life’s busyness and demands.
Through guided reflection, practical activities, and simple exercises between sessions, you’ll have opportunities to put ideas into practice in ways that work for your life.
You’ll have the opportunity to learn:
- The many dimensions of self-care and why it looks different for everyone
- How to identify personal barriers and create meaningful, achievable wellbeing goals
- The science behind habit formation and building lasting changes
- The three core components of self-compassion
- Why self-compassion is a powerful resource during challenging moments
- How to move beyond self-criticism and become your own inner ally
- Practical strategies to support a more energised, fulfilled and sustainable veterinary career
By the end of the course, you’ll have reflected on your own progress, identified practical next steps, and developed realistic strategies to care for yourself as intentionally as you care for your patients—supporting your wellbeing long after the course has finished.
“Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” – Eleanor Brownn

Course Outline
Module 1: Self Care – Building Sustainable Wellbeing
What does self-care really look like, and why is it so much more than simply taking time off?
This module explores the many dimensions of self-care, recognising its uniquely personal nature and how our needs can change throughout different stages of life and career.
Together, we’ll challenge unhelpful badges of honour such as overwork, explore common barriers to self-care, and use the science of habit formation to create meaningful changes that work within the realities of busy veterinary life.
You’ll begin shaping your own personal self-care goals while learning alongside colleagues through a practical and camaraderie-based approach to supporting sustainable wellbeing.
Module 2: Self-Compassion – Becoming Your Own Inner Ally
It’s often said that the longest relationship we will ever have is the one we have with ourselves. So, what kind of relationship are you nurturing with yourself?
This module explores self-compassion as an inner strength and resource we can draw upon during times of failure, stress and difficult life challenges.
You’ll unpack the three core elements of self-compassion, explore how it differs from self-pity, self-indulgence and self-centredness, and examine the science supporting its benefits. Through practical reflection and exercises, you’ll develop strategies for becoming your own inner ally and responding to yourself with greater understanding and kindness.
Module 3: Reflection, Discussion & Sustainable Next Steps
Self-care and self-compassion are not one-time achievements, they are lifelong, iterative wellbeing practices.
This final interactive session provides an opportunity to reflect on your experiences, share key learnings and benefit from the perspectives, ideas and experiences of others.
Together, we’ll explore what has worked, troubleshoot real-world challenges and collaboratively plan your next steps towards pursuing sustainable wellbeing and a more fulfilling veterinary career.

Addressing Common Questions
"I don’t have time to take off work. Why should I attend?"
We understand that veterinary professionals are busy, and finding time for CPD can be challenging. That’s why this course is designed to be practical, accessible and easy to fit around the demands of your professional and personal life.
Investing in your own wellbeing supports your ability to continue showing up for your patients, your team and your clients. Through practical strategies in self-care and self-compassion, you’ll gain tools that can help you navigate the challenges of veterinary practice with greater awareness, sustainability and confidence.
With live online sessions, optional Q & A, recordings available afterwards and simple activities to explore between sessions, you can engage with the course in a way that works for you, without the need for travel or significant time away from your clinic.
"Can I split the payment between myself and my workplace?"
Yes. If you have a CE budget available through your clinic or workplace, we’re happy to arrange split invoicing to help make registration easier.
Many participants choose to divide the course cost between their employer contribution and personal payment. Simply contact the VetPrac team ([email protected]) prior to registration and we can help organise the invoicing arrangement for you.
"Will I actually be able to apply these skills?"
Absolutely. This course is designed to move beyond theory and help you turn evidence-informed ideas into practical changes that fit the realities of everyday veterinary life. You’ll explore evidence-informed approaches to self-care and self-compassion through guided reflection, practical activities, personal goal setting and small, sustainable habit changes that work for you. The focus isn’t on perfection or adding another thing to your to-do list. It’s about discovering realistic practices that support your wellbeing in ways that fit your life. Whether you complete every activity or simply show up to the live sessions, you’ll be welcomed into a supportive, non-judgemental learning environment.
"Will I receive CPD points, a certificate, and learning materials?"
Yes. Every participant in the Professional Wellbeing & Self-Care online course will receive CPD points and a personalised CPD certificate, emailed on the successful completion of the quiz.
You’ll also receive digital learning materials to support your learning and provide a valuable reference as you continue applying the key concepts, techniques and strategies beyond the sessions.
"I'm already overwhelmed. What if I don't have the capacity to do all the activities?"
That’s completely okay. This course is designed to support you wherever you are right now. While there are optional reflection activities between sessions to help you apply what you’ve learned, there is no expectation that you need to do everything perfectly. If self-care for you currently looks like simply showing up to the live sessions, you’re just as welcome. Our aim is to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment where every participant can engage in the way that best suits their circumstances.
