When anatomy gives you very little room for error, getting it right the first time really matters.
Humeral condylar fractures and humeral intracondylar fissures are technically challenging cases where surgical planning, implant selection and precise execution can make all the difference to patient outcomes. They’re not the cases where you want to be figuring things out as you go.
This course is valuable for vets with existing experience in basic fracture management who want to expand their orthopaedic skill set and confidently manage HIF and HCF cases using anatomical implants. It’s particularly suited to GP vets with an interest in orthopaedics, as well as vets working in specialist practice and training programs.
You’ll work through these cases from the ground up: exploring the aetiology and pathogenesis of HIF and HCF, interpreting imaging, planning your surgical approach and making informed decisions about implant selection. You’ll also explore the strengths and limitations of different techniques and how patient and fracture factors influence your choices.
You’ll have the chance to develop your skills in:
- Planning effective pre-, intra- and post-operative management
- Safely placing transcondylar screws and anatomical bone plates
- Using patient-specific drilling guides and the Humeral Intracondylar Repair System (HIRS)
- Applying anatomical landmarks and imaging to achieve accurate implant placement
- Managing humeral unicondylar fractures using the Lateral Epicondylar Anatomic Plate (LEAP)
- Critically evaluating post-operative radiographs and surgical outcomes
The practical component is where the theory comes to life. Your dry lab kit, including dry bones, drill guides, implants and anatomical plates, will be delivered ahead of the live online session. With Dr Ben Walton guiding you in real time, you’ll work through the techniques with expert commentary, case discussion and feedback throughout. Just BYO a drill.
Led by RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery Dr Ben Walton, this hybrid course combines pre-recorded learning, live case-based discussion and a remotely supervised practical. It gives you the opportunity to build practical surgical skills without the travel, time and cost associated with a traditional face-to-face workshop.
At the end of the course, you can expect to have a more structured approach to HIF and HCF cases, greater confidence in your implant and technique selection, and practical experience applying these techniques in a controlled environment before taking them into your clinical practice.

Course Outline
Module 1 – HIF and Humeral Condylar Fractures in dogs
Provides a comprehensive review of humeral intracondylar fissures (HIF) and humeral condylar fractures (HCF) in dogs, focusing on their aetiology and pathogenesis, and how these factors influence clinical decision making and surgical approach. (This module is pre-recorded.)
Module 2 – Clinical Management
Covers the clinical management of HIF, including the use of the Humeral Intracondylar Repair System (HIRS) for effective treatment, and understanding the role of imaging modalities and patient-specific drilling guides. (This module is pre-recorded.)
Module 3 – Humeral Unicondylar Fracture Management
Explores the management of humeral unicondylar fractures, implant selection with a focus on the application of the Lateral Epicondylar Anatomic Plate (LEAP), followed by a review of critical appraisal of post operative radiographs and ongoing clinical management. (This module is pre-recorded.)
Module 4 – Live and Interactive Session (via Zoom)
Participants will be introduced to the Fusion’s Humeral Intracondylar Repair System (HIRS) and the Fusion Lateral Epicondylar Anatomic Plate (LEAP). This interactive session will use dry bone kits, drill guides, implants and anatomic plates in real-time; these kits are provided to the participants in advance of the live online session, just BYO a drill. Further discussion will focus on case-based review of HIF and HCF clinical presentations and advanced decision-making.

Ben, an RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics), has over 20 years of surgical experience and leads a busy clinical service at Movement Referrals. He is actively involved in clinical research, publishing extensively and lecturing internationally. As Fusion’s Clinical Research and Development Director, he identifies key needs in veterinary orthopaedics, contributes to product development, and designs surgeon training programs.

If you need to transfer or change your registration to another workshop, an administration fee of $50 applies. Cancellations made within 45 days of the workshop start date will incur a fee equal to 50% of the course investment, and cancellations within 7 days of commencement are non-refundable.
