Every millimetre of wound closure counts, but sometimes, simple techniques just aren’t enough. That’s where the Grafts, Flaps & Complex Wounds Workshop comes in. This hands-on training builds everyday wound management skills and gives you personalised surgical tuition in a supportive learning environment.

Veterinarians will learn about:

  • Apply skin stretching techniques & tension-relieving techniques
  • Choosing skin flap & skin graft donor sites

  • Plan, elevate & transpose random subdermal plexus flaps
  • Plan, elevate & transpose axial subdermal plexus flaps
  • Plan, elevate & transpose skin grafts
  • Approach complex wound management with innovation & creativity

Nurses & Techs will learn about:

  • Perform hanging limb preparation & wound flushing
  • Implement strategies to minimise bite injuries
  • Support perioperative analgesia & monitor anaesthesia
  • Apply effective bandaging techniques
  • Manage recovery & aftercare, including active suction drains
  • Communicate with clients about wound care & outcomes

This course is designed for registered veterinarians with moderate soft tissue surgical experience who want to strengthen their approach to both accidental and surgical wound closure.

Develop skills in wound assessment to guide smarter treatment decisions and harness natural healing to speed closure. Learn to recognize when extra tissue is needed, manage cases where primary healing isn’t possible, and confidently incorporate flaps and grafts into everyday practice.

You’ll learn how to sharpen wound assessment skills that can change treatment decisions and client communication, sometimes meaning the difference between quick closure and weeks of healing. You’ll also cover essentials like first aid, bandaging, product use, and spotting early signs of breakdown.

Dr Arthur House

Dr Arthur House

Qualifications: BSc, BVMS, PhD, Cert SAS, Dip ECVS

Arthur is a registered specialist in small animal surgery with over 20 years of experience and an extensive range of specialist surgical skills.

He has a PhD in veterinary research and has been published in a broad range of publications and peer reviewed journals. He is involved in collaborative research which ensures he stays at the forefront of veterinary science, offering the latest treatments for his patients.

Arthur continues to be active in veterinary postgraduate training through provision of continuing education lectures, supervision of new graduates, surgical interns and residents, and he has also been an author in several textbooks.

Dr Elizabeth Hoffman

Dr Elizabeth Hoffman

Qualifications: BVSc (Hons) MANZCVS

Elizabeth graduated from the University of Queensland in 2012 and after gaining experience in rural mixed practice, she completed two small animal internships.

She obtained membership in small animal surgery with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in 2018. She has completed a small animal surgery residency at the Animal Referral Hospital in Brisbane and is currently working as a registrar in preparation for fellowship exams.

Elizabeth enjoys all areas of surgery with a special interest in neurologic procedures and fracture repair.

Stephanie

Dr Stephanie Colthurst

Qualifications: BVSc, MANZCVS (SAS), DipECVS

Stephanie graduated from James Cook University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. She completed a 12-month rotating internship at Veterinary Specialist Services in 2015 followed by a second rotating internship at Southpaws Specialty Surgery for Animals in Melbourne. She continued at Southpaws for a surgical residency through the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Stephanie successfully passed her ANZCVS memberships in Small Animal Surgery in 2018 and her ECVS specialist board exams in 2023, both on her first attempt.

Steph rejoined the team at Veterinary Specialist Services in 2021 where she continues to practice. Whilst she enjoys all aspects of surgery, she particularly enjoys oncologic surgery and wound management.

Jason Hoon

Dr Jason Hoon

Qualifications: BVSc (Hons), MVS, MVetClinStud, MANZCVS (Small Animal Surgery), Diplomate ECVS

Jason graduated from the University of Sydney in 2014 with first class honours and the University Medal. He started his career in small animal general practice in coastal South Australia before moving to Queensland in 2016, where he completed his rotating and surgical internship with the Veterinary Specialist Services team in Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Jason is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and an experienced clinical educator. He enjoys teaching future generations of veterinarians, and his particular interests are oncologic and soft tissue reconstruction surgery, orthopaedics and employing minimally invasive techniques.

Margie

Dr Margie McEwen

Qualifications:BVSc DACVAA MANZCVS

Margie is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia.

Many vets and nurses will agree that Margie’s warmth and her willingness to share her clinical and academic experience have been instrumental in their careers. Margie maintains, however, that it was her years in private practice rather than her academic accolades which keep her tuned in to the reality of veterinary medicine. Margie continues to teach anaesthesia and analgesia into VetPrac’s hands-on workshops and online courses, as she continues her mission for lifelong learning.

Rhonda Ponder

Qualifications: RVN, AVN, DipVN(GP), DipVN(Surgery)

Rhonda has over 20 years of experience spanning general practice, specialty surgery and anaesthesia, emergency and critical care, as well as management and professional development. She holds Diplomas in Veterinary Nursing (General Practice and Surgery), is RECOVER certified, an accredited Mental Health First Aid Officer, and has maintained VNCA Accreditation since 2009. One of the first AVNAT Registered Veterinary Nurses in Australia, Rhonda was named VNCA National Veterinary Nurse of the Year in 2023. Passionate about advancing veterinary nursing, she lectures and teaches nationally and internationally, with clinical interests in anaesthesia, loco-regional analgesia, surgery and critical care.

Janine Irwin

Janine Irwin

Qualifications: BAppSc Vet Tech, Cert IV TAE

Janine Irwin is VetPrac’s Education Coordinator and a qualified veterinary technician with extensive experience in clinical practice and training. Before joining VetPrac, she worked in both general and emergency veterinary settings, developing a deep understanding of wound care and practical patient management.

Beyond the clinic, Janine has served as a long-term volunteer and group training officer with the State Emergency Service, where she developed a deep understanding of leadership, crisis management, and resilience. She’s also an Emergency Services Peer Support Officer, dedicated to supporting mental health and interpersonal wellbeing across professions.

With additional education in interpersonal relationships and human behaviour, Janine creates learning spaces that are practical, encouraging, and grounded in empathy.

Sam Kempster

Samantha Kempster

Qualifications: Dip An Tech, Cert IV VN, Cert IV TAE, MHFA

With a lifelong passion for animal behaviour that began in her early teens through dog training, Sam has dedicated more than 25 years to veterinary education. Her career began with training veterinary nurses at TAFE before moving into the university sector, where she supported the education of both veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Now an Online Course Facilitator with VetPrac, Sam combines her love of teaching, animal behaviour, and supporting the veterinary profession. Outside of work, she enjoys recharging by spending time with family and exploring the outdoors through camping.

Jess Austin

Jessica Austin

Qualifications: RVN, Cert IV VN, Dip (surg), Dip (GP), ISFMcertFN, Cert IV TAE

Jessica has been a veterinary nurse for more than 15 years, with experience in both general practice and referral clinics. She is currently the Referral Team Leader in the Peninsula Vet Emergency & Referral Hospital Surgery department. Her professional interests lie in anaesthesia and analgesia, and she is undertaking an Advanced Nursing Anaesthesia Certificate with Improve International. Jessica is particularly passionate about local analgesia techniques and their role in providing effective alternative pain relief for patients.
She has contributed to the profession by publishing an article in the VNCA journal and presenting a case study at the VNCA conference. Outside of work, Jessica shares her home with three foster rescues, her cats Nikita, Bella, and Holly.

Yes. At the Grafts, Flaps & Complex Wounds Workshop we believe in work together, learn together. If three or more veterinarians from the same clinic register under one booking, you’ll automatically receive a 5% discount at checkout when you book through our website. Nurse and tech places are already included at no extra cost, so this discount is reserved for groups of veterinarians.

Yes. Every participant in the Grafts, Flaps & Complex Wounds Workshop will earn CPD points and receive a personalised CPD certificate. Certificates are emailed within seven days of the workshop, making it easy to update your professional records straight away.

At the Grafts, Flaps & Complex Wounds Workshop, all participants receive comprehensive learning materials. You’ll get digital course notes for easy reference and a printed copy of the practical guide to support your hands-on training. These resources ensure you can revisit key techniques and tips long after the workshop ends.

If you need to transfer or change your registration to another workshop, an administration fee of $50 applies. Cancellations made within 45 days of the workshop start date will incur a fee equal to 50% of the course investment.
