Dr Josh moved to Australia from New York in 1999 after completing a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He completed his Veterinary Science degree with Honours at the University of Queensland, and a Masters of Clinical Medicine and Surgery through Murdoch University.

He has a keen understanding of the joys and the pitfalls of working with herps, and now works almost exclusively with these animals. He says "This is an area where we are continuously growing and improving based on the latest research, continued education and communication with experts in the field.”

Julian has worked at Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS) in Qld and Animal Referral and Emergency Centre (AREC) in NSW. He has also been a clinician and teacher at the University of Sydney, James Cook University and the University of Queensland.

He has memberships in both small animal medicine and small animal surgery and completed his surgical residency in 2007 with time at Murdoch University and Colorado State University. He also has a Masters of Veterinary Clinical Studies.

Julian has experience in all areas of surgery from cardiothoracic, oncology and vascular to orthopaedic, neurological and trauma. He is a passionate teacher and is keen to share real-world surgery with both undergraduate students and postgraduate veterinary surgeons.

Karen is a specialist veterinary clinical pathologist who is passionate about undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary education, as well as diagnostic clinical pathology.

She now works in diagnostics, holds an honorary academic position back at University of Queensland and teaches in postgraduate veterinary education.

Her specific interests are in haematology, transfusion medicine, snake venom research and oncology.

Kat graduated with a BVSc (Hons) from UQ in 2012 and has worked in small animal practice and veterinary specialty administration. Her lived experience with suicide and mental health challenges led to a passion for supporting veterinary professionals' wellbeing. She holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science and is a LivingWorks safeTALK and ASIST trainer. As an NDIS behaviour support practitioner, she works with people with complex needs in multi-disciplinary teams. Kat is particularly interested in organisational psychology and systemic, evidence-based approaches to workforce wellbeing.

Dr Katherine Steele graduated from the University of Queensland in 2008 and completed rotating and surgical internships in Brisbane. In 2012, she became a member of the ANZCVS Surgery Chapter and later moved to Victoria to complete a residency in Small Animal Surgery at the University of Melbourne. She earned a Master of Veterinary Studies in 2016 and a Master of Veterinary Science in 2017, the same year she became a board-certified Small Animal Surgery Specialist through the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Katherine returned to Brisbane in 2016 and has worked in private referral practice ever since. She has a strong interest in soft tissue surgery and surgical oncology and has been working exclusively in surgical oncology since joining the ARH Brisbane Oncology team in 2024.

Outside of work, Katherine enjoys time with her husband and two young children. She loves exploring the outdoors, especially skiing, hiking, and mountain biking.

Katie is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and has worked in the US and Australia in both private and academic practice.

Katie loves breaking complex topics down into digestible pieces and watching staff members and students flourish as they gain knowledge and confidence. Her clinical interests include transfusion medicine, polytrauma, perioperative critical care, mechanical ventilation, and any ‘cool’ case with a chance for a good outcome despite a poor initial prognosis.

Kieran graduated from the University of Queensland in 2018. After time in general practice on the Gold Coast, he completed a rotating internship at VRH, Melbourne, and a Veterinary Anaesthesia traineeship at Murdoch University, Perth, in 2021, before finishing his Anaesthesia residency there in 2024. While in Perth, he earned a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Education, a Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies, and ANZCVS Memberships.

He is now pursuing a Master of Philosophy. Kieran enjoys teaching and has a special interest in loco-regional anaesthesia. He recently moved to Brisbane with his wife, daughter, and a collection of cavaliers.

Kieren Maddern is a European-boarded veterinary anaesthesiologist (2009) and recognised specialist in anaesthesia and analgesia. She has a particular interest in the assessment and management of pain in animals, with a strong focus on raising awareness of this often-overlooked problem. Kieren is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art perioperative analgesia and chronic pain management, within surgical and outpatient settings.

Kieren has provided specialist anaesthesia services in university hospitals, private referral centres, and as an independent consultant. Since 2010, she has worked extensively in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China. She currently offers expert anaesthesia and pain management consultancy services to veterinary practices throughout the Brisbane region.
