Dr Giles graduated from Murdoch University in 2016 and has worked exclusively in exotic veterinary medicine for the last six years. In 2022 Dr Giles received her memberships in Avian Medicine and Surgery, joining the ranks of the limited few avian veterinarians across Australia.
Dr Giles says: "Rabbits are wonderful animals that I find are so often misunderstood; they are intelligent, cheeky and even sassy. My favourite breed of rabbit would have to be Flemish and other giant breeds of rabbit. They are so friendly and chilled, and act so much like dogs - just happy to sit on the couch with their families.
Approximately 60% of the cases I see are rabbits. I have seen them come in for emergencies, vaccinations, surgeries, grooming and sometimes just to say hello. I have also written two papers on rabbits, one covering fipronil toxicity and its treatment, and the other detailing a case of a rabbit with severe mammary chain enlargement who was exposed to topical hormone creams.
My hope is that one day rabbits will be seen, treated and valued just as dogs and cats are, by both their owners and the veterinary industry.
