Biography:
Gary graduated from the University of Queensland’s Veterinary Technology program in 2006. He worked in private practice for 6 years while lecturing at UQ casually, before returning to the university to work full time within the Clinical Studies Centre in 2012. He is now Practice Manager of the UQ VETS Veterinary Teaching Hospitals.
Gary is a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS), after meeting the rigorous requirements set by the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice (AVTCP). AVTCP is modelled after the American Veterinary Medical Association accredited college, the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). Gary's subspeciality within the Academy is Exotic Companion Animals. Gary is the only technician to hold this qualification in the southern hemisphere, and there are only 11 technicians worldwide with this qualification.
Gary enjoys all aspects of his job but training students in small animal anaesthesia and reptile medicine, anaesthesia and surgery are his major passions. In 2023, he became the President of the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (VNCA) and was re-elected in 2024 for a second term.
