Have you fallen into the “chicken trap”?

We certainly have! Microwaving frozen chicken for a few minutes might yield a moist, “nutritious” morsel for the patient, but we have come to realise there are better options for our patients.

When we say “nutrition”, we’re not talking about the litres of energy drinks consumed by the staff. This on demand course considers what we know about small animal nutrition, and how we can help patients live their best lives through evidence-based feeding choices. If you’re a veterinary nurse or technician with a keen interest in patient wellbeing, you’ll find this course to be rewarding because food really matters! In this course, you’ll discover how your skills apply to nutritional management in veterinary practice, and how you can directly impact your patients through giving great nutritional recommendations.

Course schedule

Module 1: Feeding the Healthy Patient
Do you dread being asked “What’s the best diet for my pet?” or maybe you would like to know more about the science behind pet feeding. In this module we will explore the impact of life stage on nutrition in a healthy patient, and what factors you need to consider before you make a recommendation.

Module 2: The Role of Nutrition in Disease
How exactly does disease change the nutritional requirements of our patients, and how can we best support them? In this module, we break down specific nutritional requirements for diseases you see in practice. We’ll conclude with how to apply your nutrition knowledge to bring about excellent patient outcomes.

Module 3: Feeding Plans, Calculations & Other Nightmares!
The dreaded calculations and feeding plans! Certainly, this is an area where many struggle, and it often gets put in the too-hard basket. This module will simplify energy calculations into a more digestible form, show you how formulate a step by step feeding plan, and as bonus how to understand labels!

Module 4: Navigating the Pet Food Industry
The pet food industry has certainly taken off in the past 5-10 years, and it’s showing no sign of slowing down. While there are many appropriate options, how do we know we are making the best choice? In this module we will look at some common myths and misconceptions, how to navigate marketing versus science, and how to answer some common client questions.

Module 5: Tying it all Together & Making a Specific Recommendation
Now to apply everything you’ve learnt over the past 5 modules and make a recommendation. In this session we discuss how to lead a nutritional consultation, perform a nutritional assessment, and how that evolves into making a recommendation for the patient. We will look at the many ways a nutritional consultation can be utilised in practice, Hint: it’s not always weight loss!

FREE VIDEO: THE ROLE OF CLINICAL NUTRITION IN PRACTICE

Every day we see patients who would benefit from a specific nutritional recommendation. Where do we start? What do we feed a hospitalised patient, and does it really matter? In this module we will look at role of clinical nutrition in unwell patients and how this can affect healing and recovery.

Your Questions Answered

What is “On Demand”?
We created the On Demand series because you asked us for longer course access. The veterinary industry can throw busy times at us, and we received more and more requests from individuals who needed more time to complete their online courses. We think 6 months is the sweet spot – you have plenty of time to work through your CPD, and we can regularly review and update the content to make sure the course stays relevant. You can revisit the materials as often as you wish.
How and when do I access learning materials?
We use a one-stop learning platform for our web-based courses. It’s intuitive, simple and easy to navigate, and we’ll email login details to you as soon as your purchase is confirmed. You can access notes, recordings and resources any time of day or night via your personalised course library. You don’t have to watch a whole video in one sitting, and you’re in complete control.

How long is course access open?

24/7 access is available for 6 months via your course library, starting on your purchase date. For example, if you sign up on July 1st, your access will be open until January 1st the following year. We’ve chosen 6 months because veterinary medicine moves fast and our goal is to provide up to date learning materials to the VetPrac community. The education team will assess, review and update the course at the end of the subscription period. This way, we know we’re offering only current and relevant information.

What kind of learning materials are included?
Each course is different but they all include video presentations recorded live during our most popular online courses and webinars. Our educators may provide a variety of other resources, so you can expect images, diagrams, course notes, slide presentations, journal articles, links to further reading, and more.

Is there learning support available?
Of course! We’ll stay in touch with a monthly email to check in with you, and share important information with you. We’ll also remind you when your access is about to finish. If you need a hand (or if you just want to chat) our online learning team is available via email [email protected] or on 0491 943 260.

Are there assessments to complete?
Yes, but they’re not mandatory. At the end of the course there will be multiple-choice questions available through the learning platform. You’ll need to pass these to receive your CPD certificate.

Will I get CPD points and a CPD certificate?
Each registration is worth a specified number of CPD points. Once you complete the quiz questions at the end of the course, a certificate will be generated and emailed to you. The certificate will be issued in the name of the person listed on the registration form.

What happens when time runs out?
At the end of 6 months, your subscription will end. You’ll still be able to log in to your course library, but the On Demand course you’ve completed will disappear from the list of courses available to you. You will receive an email when you are nearing the end of your access period, so you can download any resources you need for future use.
