Course schedule
Module 1 – Caesarian section anaesthesia
- The babies are coming, but you’re prepared
- Caesarean sections – what’s best for mum and pups (or kittens)
A Caesarean section can be planned in advance, or present as a surprise, but after this module you’ll be ready for either. We’ll look at what drugs do and don’t cross the placenta, the changes a full-term pregnancy can have on the patient, and what to expect when anaesthetising a patient for a C-section.
Module 2 – Drug calculations
- How much am I giving?
- The difference between dose, dosage, dilutions, and volume
Whether you love mathematics or tolerate it, it is everywhere in the veterinary industry – particularly when it comes to anaesthesia. With this module, we will ease the confusion surrounding the mathematics involved with drug administration, and show you how we can use just a few formulae to figure out exactly how much of anything you need to draw up for your patient.
Module 3 – Ventilation
- Just breathe
You should leave this module with a sigh of relief, having had the opportunity to see and understand ventilation from all angles. We’ll discuss when it’s necessary and when it might not be best, and cover what it’s doing inside our patients, including things you may not even realise. We’ll go through manual versus mechanical ventilation, with the goal that you feel comfortable approaching the ventilator for your patient, regardless of your clinical setting.
Module 4 – Blood pressure
- Did I do that?
- How to cope with fluctuations in blood pressure during anaesthetic
Changes in blood pressure are common under anaesthesia, but they can also be very dangerous for your patient. This module will reiterate why blood pressure is so important, and give you the tools to systematically process the problems and solutions for those hypotensive moments. We will address the many valid blood pressure treatments, but this time, we’ll do it in a way that targets the cause and provides your patients with their best chances.
Module 5 – Pain
- It doesn’t hurt anymore, by why?
- The various ways to help a hurting patient
This module will help create understanding of the multitude of analgesic options for all our patients, and the ability to systematically target pain at all sites on the pain pathway. This module will expose you to the knowledge and allow you to openly discuss analgesic treatment for all patient procedures and diseases as well as the power to find answers for questions you don’t even know you have, yet. We will approach the pain pathway with some pharmacology and pharmacokinetics but in a way that will make your pain assessment and treatment seamless and natural.
