This workshop is designed for registered veterinarians with novice to intermediate levels of experience in abdominal ultrasound. We’ll cover everything you need to get started and some of the tricks you might have missed if you’re already using ultrasound in the clinic. In addition to hours of hands-on scanning practice, you’ll see how the experts hold and move the probe, and how they manipulate gain, focus, depth and other image optimisation tools to get the most out of ultrasound.

Systematic Scanning with Clinical Relevance
Follow a structured approach to scanning each abdominal organ: bladder, kidneys, liver, spleen, adrenals, pancreas, intestines and more. Learn to link what you see on the screen with real clinical cases.
Image Optimisation and Interpretation
Get comfortable with the controls that matter: gain, depth, and focus to improve image quality and consistency. Build your confidence in recognising normal structures and echogenicities, so you’ll be able to identify when they appear abnormal.
Ultrasound Guided Procedures
Gain hands-on experience performing ultrasound guided FNAs. You’ll learn tips to maintain image control, accuracy and patient safety while building this practical and valuable skill.

Your Educators
Dr Mark Owen
Qualifications: BVSc DipECVDI FANZCVS (Radiology) MRCVS
Mark is a registered veterinary imaging specialist in New Zealand and Europe, being a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI) and also a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS).
He teaches students in many veterinary schools in Australia including Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Charles Sturt, Queensland and James Cook Universities. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Massey University and continues to provide on-going support to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. He also currently works for Idexx Laboratories as a Telemedicine Consultant.
He has been Chief Examiner for the Australian and New Zealand College, and past President of the Australasian Association of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (AAVDI).
Dr Sarah Stallard
Qualifications: BVSc MANZCVS Cert IVUSS
Sarah graduated from the University of Bristol in the UK and migrated to Australia shortly afterwards. She began her career in emergency and critical care, obtaining her memberships with ANZCVS. She then settled in Cairns and established her ultrasound company. She completed a Graduate Certificate in Abdominal Ultrasound at the University of Melbourne, followed by certification with the International Veterinary Ultrasound Society (IVUSS). Sarah now divides her time between working in specialist practice and running a mobile ultrasound company in Brisbane, she also mentors others through the IVUSS certification program.
Dr Paul Crocker
Qualifications: BVSc MANZCVS (Int. Med., ECC, SARad)
Paul is a veterinarian with over 30 years of experience since graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1995. His diverse career has included roles in clinical practice, academia, and emergency response – most notably contributing to the UK’s 2000 Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak management and teaching at the University of Adelaide’s Vet School.
He holds Membership in three chapters of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists: Small Animal Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care, and Small Animal Radiology.
Paul now works full time at the RSPCA in Burwood, Victoria. In his spare time, he streams Final Fantasy XIV on Twitch – a hobby that helps fund his coffee habit and adds a creative twist to his veterinary career.
Dr Anna Dengate
Qualifications: BMedSc BVSc FANZCVS (Small Animal Medicine)
Dr Anna Dengate has worked across almost every role in the veterinary profession, from volunteer kennel attendant to small animal internal medicine specialist and practice owner. In 2022, she founded The Vet’s North, a specialist consultancy now supporting over 65 clinics across Australia with in-clinic ultrasound services and case advice.
Anna is passionate about empowering veterinarians and their teams to build diagnostic confidence, particularly in interpreting ultrasound findings and translating them into practical treatment plans. Having worked with thousands of veterinary professionals, she brings clear, real-world insights into what truly supports learning, teamwork and excellent patient care.
